My Personal Memoir Argumentative Essay Example For Students

My Personal Memoir Argumentative Essay I carry on with a really basic life. Not saying nothing occurs in it or that I don't effectively have some good times, I am stating I carry on with the clichã © life that I am fortunate for, and I will begin my story from the earliest starting point; beginning with my folks. My folks met in secondary school, my mother moved when she was fifteen to Venice, FL, where my Dad grew up. My mother was a team promoter while my father played football, and however they didn't reveal to me how they met I accept that is the ticket. From what they let me know, my Dad really liked my mother in secondary school, and despite the fact that my mother didn't care for my Dad in that manner she dated him for about fourteen days than said a final farewell to him. They kept being awesome companions all through secondary school, spending time with one another and their gathering of companions, they used to party a ton and do law breaker things with one another. After secondary school my Dad went off in the military, while my mom’s grades got her into the University of Florida. They didn't have mobile phones yet, so they composed letters to and fro to one another while my Dad was away. I am not actually sure when it occurred but rather my Dad admitted his adoration for my mother, and said she expected to choose if she needed him as well or in the event that they ought to go down isolated ways. My mother picked my Dad, and they have been dating from that point forward. They got hitched in 1994 and had me in 1996. So essentially I can make a romantic tale out of my mother and my dad’s lives. Presently for my life, I was conceived on March 17, 1996. At the point when I came out a redhead it was a serious stun to everyone considering no one else in my family does. The steady inquiry â€Å"where’d you get your lovely red hair?! † is constantly asked, and I never realize what to state since I have no clue. My mother and my father are the two brunettes, however despite the fact that my hair shading is unique, I look precisely like my mother. I have my dad’s highlights, his eyes, his nose, his lips, however with regards to a general look on the off potential for success that I have directly close to my mother many individuals state we pull off being sisters. I lived for a long time a desolate kid, and however I don't recollect it, my mother said I was a great youngster, scarcely cried, scarcely whimpered, I was an exceptionally content infant. On August 14, 1998, I was not, at this point a lone youngster; my not all that little now sibling, Kyle, was conceived. I venerated my child sibling. The photos show it, when he was growing up I was consistently with him, holding his hand, giving him my cover, and offering everything to him. At a certain point, however, that changed. At the point when I was in center school, my character changed totally, similar to everyone that is experiencing the â€Å"awkward stage† by then, I didn't generally have a clue acceptable behavior or anything. I went to a similar school from kindergarten through eighth-grade. It was a little sanction school called Island Village Montessori School, and I believe that may have something to do with it. I became companions with the individuals I grew up with, it was a little gathering where just we spent time with one another. Sort of like the clichã © affected coteries in the motion pictures. In seventh grade I got my first sweetheart. Erick Gasca, the cutest kid in the school. Everybody adored him, and I am not saying that just to make me look better, everybody had an issue with us dating since I was the cumbersome red head with supports and he was the tall solid child with tan skin and he had such an incredible character, he was so clever. I adored being around him, regardless of whether we were dating or not. Kyle didn't care for that, he was consistently frantic at me for bringing Erick home. He would consistently get frantic at me, and at whatever point Erick and I would do as meager as clasp hands he was consistently there to shout at me. So I sort of began despising my sibling. One night, Kyle and I got in our most noticeably awful battle ever. He began advising my folks things to attempt to get me in a tough situation, similar to I was escaping around evening time to see Erick. So I became ill of it and begun berating him, calling him names, so he came up to me and attempted to smack me in the face, and I punched him back. We got in this enormous clench hand battle, I was the greater kin at that point, so I beat him really terrible, and my Dad needed to pry me off of him for me to stop. From that point onward, I didn't converse with him for quite a while; I don't generally recollect Kyle in my life in the remainder of my center school life. I kept dating Erick, and spending time with my companions, I was in Drama, and played softball. So I had the best life in center school, I was fundamentally the clichã © well known secondary school young lady you find in the motion pictures, just in center school. It wasn’t until about fourteen days after center school was over I felt as though my life was self-destructing, I had been dating Erick for very nearly two years when he undermined me. He made out with another young lady, and despite the fact that it doesn't sound as awful as it should, I was grief stricken. He was my sole long haul sweetheart I had. I went in sort of a downturn state, where I would not like to get up, I would not like to eat, I quit spending time with my companions, and as senseless as it is currently, I truly loved him, despite the fact that I was so youthful. At long last a young lady who I played softball with, Megan, came more than one day and revealed to me I have to accomplish something, and we began hanging out constantly, and afterward another young lady I played softball with, Rachel, began spending time with us. We were a definitive trio. Investigation of profound quality and responsibility in lawful s EssayI accept that kinship is significant. I am an autonomous individual that likes to get things done all alone, yet in the event that I didn't have companions to help me through everything that I do, or to get me when I am feeling down, I don't have the foggiest idea where I would be in life at this moment. Everyone in my life is accomplishing something other than what's expected, regardless of whether on the off chance that it is remaining at home and being in a band or going to University of South Florida St. Pete to be a craftsman, we are all there to help one another and get each other when one individual falls. I love that about my life, I am appreciative to such an extent that I have such huge numbers of supporters, including my family. I am additionally not saying you need companions to prevail throughout everyday life, I simply accept that they will help you a ton intellectually. To offer you guidance when you can't generally make sense of it for yourself. Likewise I accept that on the off chance that you lose companions, you will make new and potentially better ones. Ones that merit everything over the long haul. I am fortunate to have a strong family as well, my father went to each and every softball match-up this season, and a ton of the young ladies said they have never met a parent that way. My mother is increasingly strong about my evaluations, she generally calls me to check whether I need assistance with anything scholastically, likely on the grounds that she was consistently the keen one and my father was consistently the lively one; however they make an incredible blend. My folks show me a great deal, I am progressively similar to my father character savvy, my mother is a talker, and she will stay there and talk for quite a long time. I don't generally like talking, I would prefer to hush up about things at that point to simply stay there and talk about rubbish, similar to my father. My mother additionally doesn't favor of tattoos, yet my father has two. I love tattoos, I love the way that it communicates workmanship in an alternate manner that will keep going forever, and my father backs me up on that. I am likewise increasingly open with my father then my mother in light of the fact that my mother has a major mouth, and on the off chance that I advise her not to tell anyone, she doesn't check her family, which is her sister and mother, and they tell every other person. Furthermore, since my father doesn't generally prefer to individuals all that much in any case I disclose to him everything, and he doesn't pass judgment, he just reveals to me his assessment and proceeds onward. Likewise that is another characteristic I got from my father, I regard people’s security and will simply reveal to them how I feel and proceed onward. I got my music taste from my father likewise, he tunes in to great stone so I tune in to exemplary stone, which I additionally began tuning in to present day rock, and pop punk, and post no-nonsense. Many individuals don't anticipate that from me, however it is somewhat similar to my skeleton in the closet that I tune in to post in-your-face (which is screamo with singing in it) since I don't seem as though I do I presume? In spite of the fact that I wear a ton of dark shirts I don't wear the dull eyeliner and color my hair each shading on the shading wheel. Evidently that is the, â€Å"hardcore,† look. Talking about that sort of music, my father likewise acknowledges the way that I like going to shows, my mother doesn't care for me burning through cash on them, however I don't think she comprehends that it is amusing to lose all sense of direction in the music when the band is directly before you. Alongside my companions, music is critical to me as well. Which they sort of blend on the grounds that each closest companion I have had tuned in to a similar music I excepted for Megan yet she managed it. Music I think lets you simply escape from reality it might be said that no one else gets it. At the point when you can tune in to the verses and they identify with your life so much that you simply hear them out again and again to assist you with traversing any unpleasant time you are experiencing I feel that is the thing that music is about. The rap they play now on the radio, discussing drugs and engaging in sexual relations again and again; I think it is gross. I am not saying that each rap melody is that way, yet pretty much every tune you hear is, in any case, the music I tune in to doesn't have anything to do with that. This tune called, â€Å"In Between,† is likely the best tune I know expressively, and it got me through a great deal of unpleasant occasions while I was achy to go home. A portion of the verses are, â€Å"Up on the mountain, I see down beneath, It’s simple to lose yourself I realize Everybody gets high, everyone gets low, life can be such over portion. † And then it says, â€Å"don’t flee. † So it is stating that despite the fact that life gets harsh, don't flee from it, pivot a face it and traverse it. I love it so much, since I think there is a point in everybody’s life, that they simply need to flee from the intense time they are confronting. So to summarize who I am, I am a young lady that has experienced a great deal of companions,

The Crying Of Lot 49 By Thomas Pynchon - 1174 Words

Human nature will not succumb to the constraints of order, corporations, and institutions, rather return to the primal system of chaos and anarchy. Throughout history, the desire to rebel against order transcends because of our inherent disposition to rise up against authority, apparent in revolutions against an oppressive regime or in protest of immoral actions. Some prominent cases were the American Revolution, French Revolution, Transcendentalists’ civil disobedience, 1960’s counterculture movement, and the Civil Rights movement. Thomas Pynchon’s postmodernist novella, The Crying of Lot 49, set in the 1960 s counterculture era of hippies (rejecting mainstream American Society), captures the essence of rebelling against institutions.†¦show more content†¦Society responds through counterculture movements to return to disorder because people are â€Å"unwilling to accept the limitations by the virtues placed on them being human, they chose to rebel agai nst their position within the order of things. Latent within human nature is an unwillingness to accept this order, and our place within it† (McGrath 135). Joaquà n de Tristero y Calavera, the founder of Trystero, an underground network of anarchist mail carriers, exemplifies this ideal. Calavera, an â€Å"honest rebel†, came to Brussels and attempted to overthrow the Thurn and Taxis postal system, a governmental monopoly on mail. (Pynchon 131). However, he failed and retaliated with a guerilla war, â€Å"a sub rosa campaign of obstruction, terror, and depredation†, bringing chaos to the destruction of an institution (Pynchon 132) . Trystero, an intricate web of secrets, conspiracy, and chaos, functions as the driving force of entropy bringing true order to a generic life dominated by corporations and institutions (rejecting the order and transparency of governments). Disorder is order and surrounds us as everything ends in disarray. The idea of entropy entai ls that everything in the universe flows from order to disorder, and entropy is the measurement of that change. It also provides the framework for attaining the objectives of the company and thus it encompasses every sphere of management from controlling the ac tions to corporate disclosure and performance of management. The essay will discuss about the corporate governance of Standard Bank Group of South Africa. It will analyze the code of ethics, value of agents and other important parameters under the companys corporate governance. The board of members of Standard Group who are involved in corporate governance and providing leadership are based on different ethical foundations. They are responsible for the success of the bank and also fulfilling the interest of the stakeholders. The detailed role and responsibilities of the bank are set up by the board members. The board mandate takes special care to incorporate the principles of corporate governance and thus comply with the provisions of the companies act. The board of governance of the Standard Group has certain functions to perform to its committee along with the corporate governance framework. The executive of the bank engages them in critical decisions of the bank. The board of mem bers of the Standard Group conducts monthly meeting and thus various discussions are held for the improvement of the bank (Dermine 2013). Discussion Principal agent theory is one of the parts of corporate governance that shows the state of affairs in which one principal or the stakeholder takes the decision on behalf of an agent or the management. Standard Bank Group of South Africa follows a high standard in its corporate governance. The bank complies with the regulations that have been put forward with the legislation. The bank is also enhancing their corporate governance strength with the expansion of its ranches to other countries and region. The organization is involved in taking continuous initiative to improve their corporate governance hold in order to benefit the stakeholders (Bovens, Goodin, and Schillemans 2014). The board of directors is involved in formulating the rules and regulation of the bank that can comply with the needs of the international practices. These principles needs to be followed by the every agents of the firm such as the subsidiary firms, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, managers, trustees, stockholders inves tors and others. The subsidiary of the company complies by these rules made by the stakeholders and uses it in their own governance. The corporate governance body also advices the subsidiaries about the maximum risk tolerance limit by the bank. The board of directors and other auditors of the company seek permission from the stakeholders of the bank on certain actions whose rights are particularly reserved with the stakeholders. The stakeholders or boards of the group take all the governance decision. They are the one that forms all the governance rule of the bank and offer effective leadership on it after evaluating the ethical concern of the organization (Filatotchev, Jackson, and Nakajima 2013). The board comes up with various principles of the corporate governance according to the Companies Act, which the stakeholders and other bodies of the group need to follow. The board of the organization is of appropriate size consisting of twenty directors of the group. The board of the group such as the Chairman and the chief executive follows several roles. Some of the roles are setting ethical tone, leading the committee, maintaining the trust of the stakeholders, appointing executive team, formulating groups strategy, establishing an appropriate organizational structure and others. The board is the principal that formulates the rules and regulation of the governance and other bodies are the agents that need to follow the rules in the interest of the organization. In 2016, the group held a total of six meeting in which the board decided about various strategies of the bank (Crane, and Matten 2016). The member of the board such as the chairman, chief executive and secretary set the agenda of the group. The meeting decided about certain important critical matters about administration and compliance. The meeting also allowed the peers and non-executive directors to share their views about the rules and regulation of the company in the absence of chief executive. The meeting finalized certain governance for the company such as the retirement of the financial director, appointment of five non-executive directors, promoted the policy of gender diversity and considered the report put forward by the King Code 4. The board also shows diversity in a broadest sense in order to ensure that diversity is maintained in the workplace as well by other member of the bank. However, it is seen that the directors of the business does not take part in the business meeting in cases when the board thinks it might lead to conflicts. At those cases the directors of the bank does not take part in any business matters discussed in the meeting. Further, it is noticed that the directors o f the company are offered with the governance manual in which all the details about the governance is provided. The details contained under the corporate governance report are the governance structures, mandates, important policies, legislations, and others. The directors are informed about this crucial information along with the regulations, code of conduct, changes made in the rules. This governance manual helps them to direct and assist other member of the bank residing in different branches. Thus here there are various stages of principal and agent relationship found in the banking environment. One such pair is the board and the directors in which the board is the principal and the directors are the agents. On the other hand the another pair is of the directors and the staffs in which the directors are the principal that direct the staffs about the governance rule with the help of the manual (Garca-Snchez et al. 2015). Code of ethics shows the mission and vision of the organization in relation to the values and ethics. It states the ways by which the directors and other bodies of the organization as well as the employees should approach each other. It also states the principles and ethics lying at the core of an organization and the amount of professionalism maintained by the people. Code of ethics is also known as ethical code in some of the organization that guides the member of the organization to know the difference between right and wrong within the campus. These codes of ethics are adopted by both governmental and nongovernmental organization to carry out their professional responsibility effectively. For the purpose few organizations carry out code of practice under which they discuss about the issues, decision, rules that the personals of the organization needs to maintain during their course of professional practice (Mason and Simmons 2014). Standard Bank Group also maintains a code of eth ics that defines their values within the organization throughout its branches. The ethical values maintained by the bank ensure that they carry out their business at a right way in the right direction. For the purpose, the bank has put forward, certain codes that are the laws the personals of the business needs to follow. These codes of ethics are also essential for the organization to get the trust of their shareholders. This is because the stakeholders are imperative to the organization and they have trust on the organization only if follows certain rules and trails of professionalism. The Standard Bank Group decides on the values that need to be followed by every brand of the bank. The code is mostly related to corruption, corporate governance and harassment within the premises of the bank. These ethics are applied at every place wherever the banks are operative. The globally recognized code put forward by the group is the King Code (Salvioni and Astori 2015). The code of ethics made by the company needs to be followed by each of its members including the board. The ethical values that are put forward by the group are also made aligned with the policies and procedures followed by the group. This is done to assist the employees, boards and others to easily follow the code of conduct. The group has formulated eight values for the organization to deal effectively with the stakeholders, customers and other members of the bank. While making the values the bank keeps in mind that customers are important and thus they should always be at the front of any policies. The important values of the bank are adequate customer service, growth of companys personals, offering the best to our stakeholders, effective teamwork, holding respect for each other irrespective of the designation one holds and various other values that shows the ethics of the bank (Waemustafa and Abdullah 2015). The company also follows certain working ways that can comply with their values and ethics such as the bank participates in any activity in a careful way and tries to avoid sudden reactions or actions for any situation that might prove to be wrong in future. The organization beliefs on the benefits of teamwork rather than working individually. These methods are followed across various branches of the bank and across countries. Further, the team works accordingly to maintain the dignity of each other as well as of the bank. The bank maintains a sense of respect within its environment and outside of Standard Bank. The organization makes it clear to it people that integrity is to be maintained in the environment of the bank. The bank has also formulated certain principles as well, that has been decided by the group such as fair relationship with the customers, offering the best service and products to the customers, keep informing the customers, analyzing the needs f the customers These are some of the important principle the bank and it is noticed that most of its principles focuses on building strong customer relationship as they are the one that gives business to the bank. The second important parameters of our value giving are the stakeholders that help the business to attract customers and investors for the bank. These are some of the code of ethics that the bank follows within its business environment and with the external partners. The next factor that comes into concern about corporate governance of an organization is the management that plays a great role in both formulating the governance as well as following it. The board of the company is responsible in carrying out the day-to-day task of the company regarding business activities and the ethical values. The board consists of chief executive officer, the executive board and some of the external board members. The executive committee of the Standard Bank Group is Group chief executives, Group financial director, chief executives, Group chief compliance officer, Group chief information officer and others. Each of these members is responsible of some work or the other contributing to the growth of the organization and maintaining its dignity in the bank. The management is responsible for various activities such as for board meeting, administrative work, maintaining daily data, carrying out remuneration work, auditing and various other activities. Each of the r esponsibility is carried out by various leaders and members assigned for it. The bank has formed a committee consisting of all the required members of management and has divided the responsibilities accordingly. A director affairs committee includes all the directors of eh bank and are determined to manage the corporate governance of the organization. The committee also makes sure that the people responsible for it properly maintain the laws, regulations and codes. The group of the director committee is also responsible for further duties such as reviewing the corporate governance report put forward by the board and prove that the report is achievable. The committee also has to recommend various section of the organization about the ways they should conduct their job responsibly. Another committee is the group audit committee that carries out all the audit work (Haan and Vlahu 2016). All the corporate organizations in South Africa are aware of Kings Report on corporate governance. The managers of the standard bank group apply the principles of King Code IV which was released in 2009. The managers started using this method from 2015 which was released for public comment by the Institute of Directors in South Africa. The King IV approach provides an integrated approach to corporate governance by encompassing the social, economic and environmental spheres. Various effective and quality corporate behaviors also provide different ways to mitigate the social and economic challenges. King IV provides broader scope and acceptance of corporate governance and thus makes it accessible to the organizations (Yeh et al. 2013). Moreover, King IV also focuses on apply and explain rather than apply or explain which was encouraged by King III. However, earlier King III aimed at encouraging the quantitative explanation and application on how the principle gets affected. Whereas Kin g IV tries to stipulate the minimum requirements for different types of remuneration policies and also provides that the adoption of such policies will be possible through 75% non advisory vote of the stakeholders (Chu et al. 2016). In such a case, the stakeholder approach will also require that the governing body will balance, weigh and consider the legitimate interests, needs and expectations of different stakeholders in taking important decisions for the upliftment of the organization. The managers of Standard Group will try to promote corporate governance which will help in the integral running of the organization and thus deliver an ethical culture. They will also try to enhance the performance of the employees which will help in value creation of the bank. The managers will also allow the governing body of the bank to take adequate and effective control measures. This will help in creation of trust among the employees in the organization (Qian and Yeung 2015). As corporate governance mentioned by King IV is the exercise of ethical and effective leadership which is to be implemented by the governing body. The managers of Standard Group will follow this type of leadership and thus provide strategic direction to the employees. They will also use different approving policies so that they can apply the strategies effectively. This type of ethical leadership by the managers will help in building an ethical culture in the organization. The principles which are associated with King IV is drafted in such a way that the managers will be imposed with different type of governance duties in the organization which will help them in setting effective tone and examples in the organization. They need to be unifie4d on these matters which will fulfill the core purpose of the organization, values and role of the stakeholders, the culture of the organization, legitimate grouping of the stakeholders in fulfilling their interests, needs and expectations (Faleye and Krishnan 2017). The managers of Standard Group must assume the responsibility of the organization and they must also try to protect the financial resources, social, intellectual, relational, human and natural capital. Moreover, the managers must also be responsible for the decisions and the actions which are to be taken by the stakeholders. This accountability must follow the designation and assumption of the responsibility which are to be taken by the managers. The governance structure which is adopted by the managers should connect to the responsibility and accountability of their post. Thus, it is the responsibility of the managers to communicate clearly with the employees as well as the stakeholders. It is also the duty of the mangers of Standard Group to ensure that the decisions taken by them are legitimate and reasonable which will help in fulfilling the expectations, needs and interests of the stakeholders (Tricker and Tricker 2015). The managers of Standard Group must ensure that the reports and disclosures of the stakeholders must be made in such a way that it is easier to assess the performance of the employees and it includes the impact of the organizational activities. The ability to sustain the creation of value is also the motive of the organization. The banks should aim for building stronger ethical culture which is known as self-policing. The cost of failure in managing the ethics will also be very high (Calomiris and Carlson 2016). The managers of the bank also focus on opportunity management and thus it proposes risk and opportunity committee in the bank who will take special measures and care of the different departments. Several meetings are held to address the agendas in the bank which are responsible for audit and management of risk in the bank. Moreover, there must be a separate audit committee which will oversee the accounts related and audit issues. It is also the duty of the manager of Standard Group to check the functioning of the various departments of the bank. Moreover, the mangers are also responsible for the ethical conduct of the stakeholders and keep a close monitoring of them through the stakeholder inclusive approach. Thus, it can be said that the policies of King IV helps the managers in the refinement of the bank (Berger et al. 2016). There are different ways and a board who are responsible for assessing the role of corporate governance. These board members are responsible for managing the risk of various activities of the bank on daily basis. They will also be responsible for overseeing the risks and providing robust challenges to the management team. They will also be responsible for independent assurance or third party line of defence. The monitoring will be done by the head of the bank or the business unit. They will be responsible for balance sheet management and capital management. Moreover, they will also be responsible for divisional risk and compliance functions. The board of directors will also be responsible for ensuring that that proper wand responsible person is involved in the management team (Armstrong et al. 2015). The next level of members who are responsible for corporate governance are the chief risk officer and the chief compliance officers. The third group of members who are responsible for co rporate governance are the internal and the external auditors of the bank. They will also be responsible for different outsourcing and implementation policies of the bank which will guide the accountability for any activity. Standard Bank Group has given more importance to King III group which has advocated and implemented the governance structure and supported leadership, corporate citizenship and sustainability. In order to create transparency in the organizational structure in accordance with the various lines of responsibility, the Bank has established a separate governance structure. They will be responsible for effective and full control of the group and its responsibility and accountability for measuring the performance of the group. This includes reviewing and monitoring the corporate strategies through the establishments of different key policies and objectives, determination of the risk, preference and tolerance of the group, understanding the risk which is to be faced by the government as well as the bank. The board is also responsible for the overall responsibility of the entire management group and also maximizing the value of the shareholders. In performing its different responsibilities, the board members are supported by the senior managers of the bank along with different panels and forums of the bank. The committee who is responsible in these will have specific charter and reference and thus they can provide assistance to the board members. Moreover, the bank also has different committees and thus they also provide support to the governance team in performing their duties. The various mechanisms such as the strategies, policies and processes which are to be implemented for providing support to the governance committee are also to be taken care of by the board members. The nomination committee also assists the board members in identifying the suitable and the correct members who can address the requirements in terms of their knowledge and skil ls. This committee will also be responsible for succession planning, dismissal, appointments, reviewing committee structures and remuneration policies. The remuneration committee plays an independent role to oversee the various processes which are associated with remuneration and to consider and approve the issues and approvals which are associated with remuneration. The committee also assigns that the remuneration policy is aligned accordingly and it will also help in promotion of the strategic objectives of the bank. The social, ethics and transformation committee is a mandatory board that will discharge the activities of evaluation and monitoring roles. They will focus on economic empowerment and employability of the community members in the bank. The risk and the ethical committee will relate to the ethical behavior within the group members. The role of the actuarial committee will be to act like a sounding board for the bank (James and Joseph 2015). The audit committee and the statutory actuary in relation to the actuarial and other related matters of technical nature will discharge the functions towards the shareholders and the policyholders of the bank. They will also be responsible in statutory actuary and thus fulfilling the statutory and professional responsibilities. The fair practice committee will be responsible for carrying out different functions of the bank such as ensuring fair treatment to the customers as it is the main responsibility of embedding the corporate value at various levels within the bank. They are also responsible for various discretionary functions and ensuring that compliance is done accordingly. This board will act as an independent governance forum and thus they will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of adherence from and treating the customers fairly in accordance with the regulation committee. The risk and compliance committee also assist the board members in discharging different kinds of responsibility for the various processes which are associated with different types of management and compliance issues. This committee will review the overall compliance to the significant regulations and laws. Thus, the corporate governance team will enable the delivery and discharge of effective governance to demonstrate adequate control in successful operation (Claessens and Yurtoglu 2013). Conclusion Thus, it can be said that corporate governance plays an important role in all organizations. The board of directors who are the primary stakeholders plays an important role in influencing corporate governance. The directors are elected by the shareholders or are appointed by different board members. The code of ethics of Standard bank ensures that they do the right business in correct time by complying with the different laws and rules. The code of ethics is informed by the ethical standards of the bank. The bank also has a subsidiary framework governance body that will ensure consistent application of sound governance of the organization. The mechanisms are framed in consultation with the employees and the stakeholders of the bank. Therefore, careful management of the boards planning plays an effective role in corporate governance. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. - Jane Austen, Persuasion 46. Love is a hawk with velvet claws Love is a rock with heart and veins; Love is a lion with satin jaws, Love is a storm with silken reins. - Kurt Vonnegut, EPICAC 47. She wasn't doing a thing that I could see, except standing there leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together. - J. D. Salinger, A Girl I Knew 48. I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.  I love you  simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this,  in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close. - Pablo Neruda, 100 Love Sonnets 49. Her little shoulders drove me mad; I hugged her and hugged her. And she loved it. 'I love love,' she said, closing her eyes. I promised her beautiful love. I gloated over her. If I knew that this would be the last time I would hear your voice, I’d take hold of each word to be able to hear it over and over again. A Moral Issue Of Murder essays

A Moral Issue Of Murder essays Capital punishment is an issue that has long been debated amongst Americans. We have been questioning the morality of an Eye For an Eye way of thinking. Many say that serious crimes deserve serious punishments such as death, where others view death to be an unjust punishment for any crime. Each side seems to be equal in its volume of supporters. There are also many who ride the fence on the issue, unconvinced of either side. I, however, am writing to illustrate the immoral view of capital punishment. This document does not presume to have the right answer to the question, for to assume that would be arrogant. No, this essay is merely a tool to be used in weighing this very important issue. When the unspeakable happens and a human life, or lives, is taken by another, for reasons other than self defense or accidental, revenge and fury are so often the first emotions to surface. It is often thought that restitution will ease the pain of loss. To accomplish the feat to revenge wounded hearts, many turn, quite ironically, to murder. That is after all what capital punishment entails, murder. However justified, to intentionally end a life is to murder. At first glimpse, to take a life for a life taken seems with just cause and the right of society. It appears to be the only one fair solution. But is it okay for society to kill a killer? Is the right truly given to humans to deal out judgment and death? Should it be our decision who shall live and die? Or does only one truly posses the gift to decide? These questions make up the backbone of this controversy and need to be answered. I find it odd when Ernest Haag states, I see no evidence for society somehow not having the right to execute murderers. It has always done so. Traditional laws and Scriptures have always supported the death penalty(640). When the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States ...

Financial Accountancy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Financial Accountancy - Essay Example The paper will also address the limitations of financial reporting. The concept of corporate governance has evolved from olden days and undergone considerable changes from time to time. According to Solms and Solms (2008), corporate governance can be defined as â€Å"the set of processes, customs, policies, laws, and institutions affecting the way a corporation (or company) is directed, administered or controlled† (p.2). Organisational managements are always eager to update their corporate governance policies in accordance with the needs of the current business environment, because corporate governance principles influence the relationship between different stakeholder groups and the objectives of the organisation (OECD, 2004). Firms mainly focus on their corporate governance strategies to enhance economic efficiency, operational transparency, and shareholder values. As a series of corporate failures and bank collapses over the last decade were attributed to accounting fraud and poor internal check systems, today business enterprises give par ticular emphasis to improving their corporate governance policies. In addition to stating the roles and responsibilities of the board of directors, corporate governance strategies give emphasis to the rights and privileges of stockholders. As per the ICA document A history of corporate governance in the United Kingdom (2009), corporate governance developments began in UK in late 1980s and early 1990s as a result of the corporate scandals such as Polly Peck and Maxwell. Those scandals were resulted from financial reporting irregularities, and hence the government established the ‘Financial Aspects of Corporate Governance Committee’ chaired by Sir Adrian Cadbury. The Cadbury Report published in 1992 recommended a number of measures for increasing the transparency of financial reporting. In

Analysis of The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong Research Paper

Analysis of The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong - Research Paper Example The idea of adaptation is one that becomes fragmented in identity and in being able to move to a foreign land without associating one’s identity with being foreign. Complexities in Immigrant Adaptation The immigrant adaptation that is developed in various regions is dependent on attitudes, behaviors, definitions and associations with a majority culture. The attitudes which are created create differences between the majority or native groups and the minority groups and immigrants that come from a different region. The first level of adaptation is one which is based on culture shock, which is based on the initial reactions, misunderstandings and lack of understanding about the majority culture. The process then continues with trying to adapt to behaviors, cultural norms, language and identifying the self in a different context. However, this often occurs without completely adapting into society or being a part of the majority mentality and group. The ability to adapt is based on cognitive styles and the association with both individual personality and overall adaptation into society (Witkin, 17). Throughout the explanations offered by Chong, there is a sense of trying to adapt and the continuous displacement that is a part of coming from China and assimilating in Canada. The metaphor that is used is one which is based on having a division of identity in two, one which belongs to the old culture and the other which is a part of the new. â€Å"It was as if the coat, in its last performance, in forbearance and forgiveness, had itself restored the two halves of the family – one in Canada, one in China – to one† (Chong, 3). This particular example becomes a main association in the book where the idea of adaptation also means losing part of one’s identity to gain another. While there is a strong association with the original culture, the need to be a part of the new becomes the main concern. The ability to adapt within society is not only seen with the tearing apart of identity by trying to fit in with the majority. There are also other layers of adaptation which occur. Acculturation and ethnic relations are two areas which are defined when one is working into a society. Acculturation is when an individual decides to begin being a part of the majority culture. Language, food, dress and other appearances are a part of the main culture while the area in which one immigrates form is left behind. The desire is to build ethnic relations with others that are in the community while creating a plural society of multiculturalism. It is noted that this changes security, tolerance and ethnic attitudes among both majority and minority groups while developing attitudes within the larger of society (Berry, 719: 2006). The changes in attitude that are noted with adaptation is one that is also seen in the narration. For instance, when working toward moving into the Canadian community, it is expected that Chen Sam and his family lives in Chinatown, works in a sewing factory and takes their place among immigrants. While this is expected for immigrants, the need to adapt into the society becomes more prominent based on need and the expected lifestyle of those working in the country. â€Å"Chan Sam had his own ideas about what his daughter’s next move should be. ‘Everybody is buying a house,’ he said. He persuaded them to look at what he’d found for sale†¦ Winnie and John liked the neighborhood. There was a United Church across the

Fantastic Voyage Battle of the Lung Essay Example for Free

Fantastic Voyage Battle of the Lung Essay Good morning everyone! Signing on, India Hornsby with ASAP Health. I will be reporting live inside Mrs. Frizzle. She has been under the weather for about two days now. A bacterium is invading the lower lobe of her right lung. It’s my job to pilot the invasion and do a live report on what I see. I will enter from the right femoral vein and follow a path to the lower lobe of the right lung via the right pulmonary artery. I will be describing the structures that I pass by and through. Once I have reached the lung, I will describe the structures that I see and discuss how the body fights against the invader. After that I will exit the body cross the alveolar membrane on a path and out the nose. I will enter Mrs. Frizzle body through the femoral vein. The femoral vein is located in the upper thigh and pelvic region of the body and runs close to the femoral artery (Yahoo Health, 2012). It’s one of the larger veins in the venal system (Yahoo Health, 2012). The femoral vein returns blood in the leg to the heart via the iliac vein (WiseGeek, 2012). Continuing North from the femoral vein I will pass through the inguinal ligament. The inguinal ligament forms a band that runs from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubis area of the spine (Yahoo Health, 2012). It serves as a base to the inguinal canal because hernias can form there. The main function of the inguinal ligament is to protect the tissue that is constantly moving in the trunk and lower extremities of the body (Yahoo Health, 2012). From the inguinal ligament still heading north I will pass through the external iliac vein. The external iliac vein is a continuation of the femoral vein above the inguinal ligament. It starts at the groin and runs along the edge of the pelvic area (Yahoo Health, 2012). When it is combined with the internal iliac vein it forms the common iliac vein. The external iliac vein drains the leg and lower part of the anterior abdominal wall (Merriam-Webster, 2012). As I continue on I will pass the internal iliac vein to the East. The internal iliac vein combines with the external iliac vein to form the common iliac vein. It drains the pelvis, gluteal, and perineal regions (Merriam-Webster, 2012). Next I will be passing through the common iliac vein, which is formed by the external and internal iliac veins. It allows blood circulation from the lower abdomen and legs (Wise Geek, 2012). The hepatic vein carries deoxygenated blood out of the liver and into the inferior vena cava (Wise Geek, 2012). The blood that was used to feed the liver and the blood from the gastrointestinal tract, spleen, pancreas, and gallbladder is transported through the hepatic vein. From the hepatic vein I will then pass through the inferior vena cava. The inferior vena cava runs behind the abdominal cavity and alongside the right vertebra column of the spine (Yahoo Health, 2012). It carries oxygen depleted blood from the lower part of the body back to the heart. The inferior vena cava empties into the right atrium (Yahoo Health, 2012). Next stop is the right atrium. It’s located on the lower back side of the heart. The right atrium is one of the four chambers of the heart. Blood enters the heart through the two atriums (Yahoo Health, 2012). Oxygen depleted blood enters the right atrium via the inferior and superior vena cava (Yahoo Health, 2012). I will then pass through the tricuspid valve. It forms the boundary between the right ventricle and atrium (Yahoo Health, 2012). The tricuspid valve has tree flaps that keep blood from going back into the right atrium when they are closed. Next I will be moving on to the right ventricle. It is one of the four chambers of the heart, located at the lower left portion of the heart below the right atrium and opposite the left ventricle (Yahoo Health, 2012). The right ventricle is responsible for pumping oxygen depleted blood to the lungs. I will now pass through the right pulmonary artery. It begins at the base of the heart’s right ventricle and is approximately 3 cm in diameter and 5 cm in length (Yahoo Health, 2012). It then splits into the left and right pulmonary arteries. The right pulmonary artery delivers oxygen depleted blood to the right lung. From the right pulmonary artery I have made it to the right lung. Once in the lung I will travel South West to reach the lower lobe of the right lung. I’m finally in the lung. I can finally see what it looks like. I see a structure that looks like a three without leaves. I am passing the right primary bronchi. It is a tube like structure that allow for the passage of air between the trachea and lung (Health Type, 2012). As I move along the right primary bronchi branches off into the right secondary bronchi. Each one of the bronchi serves as an airway to a specific lobe of the lung (Wikipedia, 2011). The bronchi have cartilage plates, smooth muscles, and mucus-secreting gland cells in its wall (Wikipedia, 2011). They contain cilia, which removes dust and debris. Wow! The right secondary bronchi are branching off into very small passageways called bronchioles. The bronchioles are responsible for controlling air distribution and airflow resistance in the lungs (Wise Geek, 2012). They also contain cilia that help move air through the system. The bronchioles are now terminating at the alveolar ducts. They are the tiny end ducts that fill the lungs. At the end of the alveolar ducts are the alveolar sacs. The alveolar sacs resemble a cluster of grapes (Structure and Function, 2008). The walls of the alveolar sacs are made up of numerous alveoli, each of them resemble a single grape (Structure and Function, 2008). To fight the bacterium invasion in Mrs. Frizzle body a group of many organs and billions of freely-moving and trillions of free-floating molecules in different areas of the body work together (Structure and Function, 2008). Nonspecific or innate immunity is maintained by mechanisms that attack any irritant or abnormal substance that threatens the internal environment (Structure and Function, 2008). Mrs. Frizzle nonspecific immunity kicked in when the invading bacterium entered the lung. Pac man-like white blood cells called monocytes and macrophages take action. They then busily recruit a number of other cells including more macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells (Greater Immunity, 2010). All these cells work together to defeat the invader. In the body’s defense, Mrs. Frizzle will develop a fever. The fever is the body’s way of dealing more effectively with the invader. Later, during recovery, lymphocytes become active and create antibodies which will help Mrs. Frizzle deal with that particular bacterium, if she happens to encounter it again (Greater Immunity, 2010). The activated lymphocytes and antibodies become part of Mrs. Frizzle acquired immunity. Specific or acquired immunity includes protective mechanisms that confer specific protection against certain types of invading bacteria or other toxic material (Structure and Function, 2008). Mrs. Frizzle built up specific immunity during her illness. Her memory cells in her immune system learned the illness and remembered how to beat it in the future if it was to occur again. Specific immunity can be natural or artificial. Natural immunity is naturally inherited from the parents. Artificial immunity is immunization. Now that the â€Å"Battle of the Lung† is documented I can return home. I will now cross the alveolar membrane into the alveoli. I will take the alveoli to the bronchioles. From the bronchioles I will pass through the bronchi. I will then take the bronchi to the trachea. Next I will take the trachea to the nasopharynx. Upon leaving the nasopharynx I will arrive at the orthopharynx. I will then take the orthopharynx to my destination, out the nose. This was indeed a fantastic voyage. I hope you have learned just as much as I have. Signing out, India Hornsby at ASAP Health.

Gilligan’s Perception of Morality in An American Story :: American Story Essays

Gilligan’s Perception of Morality in An American Story Though individuals live by and react similarly to various situations, not all people have the same morals. I can relate to instances where I have supported a belief, regardless of the criticisms that arise, all because my choice is based upon personal morals. The same can be said regarding Debra J. Dickerson as she expresses in her novel, An American Story. In Carol Gilligan’s â€Å"Concepts of Self and Morality,† she states, â€Å"The moral person is one who helps others; goodness in service, meeting one’s obligations and responsibilities to others, if possible without sacrificing oneself† (170). After considering this statement, I strongly feel that Gilligan’s proposal lacks the depth to accurately characterize the moral person, but I am able to accept the argument raised by Joan Didion. Her essay entitled, â€Å"On Morality,† clearly provides a more compelling and acceptable statement in describing the moral person by saying, â€Å"I fo llowed my own conscience, I did what I thought was right† (181). Joan Didion’s proposal is precise and acceptable. It is obvious that as long as people follow what they believe is the right thing to do, and approach the situation maturely, their actions can be considered examples of morality, and they can then be considered moral human beings. A moral person goes beyond the phrase, â€Å"without sacrificing oneself,† provided by Gilligan in her essay. This is clear by looking back at a specific example. I can recall a time when an entire class of mine decided to play a trick on a teacher in high school. They planned on manipulating her by telling lies in regard to what she had assigned and made her feel embarrassed. I wanted not to be part of these hurtful actions, so rather than tagging along as most of the other students, I did something about it. I stood my ground and as the students told one lie after another, I raised my hand and made her aware of the prank that was being executed. Though everyone looked upon me as the one who spoiled everything, the simple gesture of raising my hand revealed my morals to the class. At the time, I followed my conscience and followed through with what I thought was right, whether others agreed with me or not. This clearly supports and exemplifies Didon’s explanation o f the moral person.

Humbug Definition

Humbug was a word used the 19th century to mean a trick played upon unsuspecting people. The word lives on in the English language today thanks largely to two notable figures, Charles Dickens and Phineas T. Barnum. Dickens famously made â€Å"Bah, humbug!† the trademark phrase of an unforgettable character, Ebenezer Scrooge. And the great showman Barnum took delight in being known as the â€Å"Prince of Humbugs.† Barnum’s fondness for the word indicates an important characteristic of humbug. It isn’t just that a humbug is something false or deceptive, it is also, in its purest form, highly entertaining. The numerous hoaxes and exaggerations which Barnum exhibited during his long career were termed humbugs but calling them that indicated a sense of playfulness. Origin of Humbug as a Word The word humbug seems to have been coined sometime in the 1700s. Its roots are obscure, but it caught on as slang among students. The word began appearing in dictionaries, such as in the 1798 edition of A Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue edited by Francis Grose: To Hum, or Humbug. To deceive, to impose on one by some story or device. A humbug; a jocular imposition, or deception. When Noah Webster published his landmark dictionary in 1828, humbug was again defined as an imposition. Humbug as Used by Barnum The popular use of the word in America was largely due to Phineas T. Barnum. Early in his career, when he exhibited obvious frauds such as Joice Heth, a woman said to be 161 years old, he was denounced for perpetrating humbugs. Barnum essentially adopted the term and defiantly chose to consider it a term of affection. He began to call some of his own attractions humbugs, and the public took it as good-natured kidding. It should be noted that Barnum despised people like con men or snake oil salesmen who actively cheated the public. He eventually wrote a book titled The Humbugs of the World which criticized them. But in his own usage of the term, a humbug was a playful hoax that was highly entertaining. And the public seemed to agree, returning time and again to view whatever humbug Barnum might be exhibiting. Humbug as Used by Dickens In the classic novella, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the miserly character Ebenezer Scrooge uttered â€Å"Bah, humbug!† when reminded of Christmas. To Scrooge, the word meant a folly, something too silly for him to spend time on. In the course of the story, however, Scrooge receives visits from the ghosts of Christmas, learns the true meaning of the holiday, and ceases to regard celebrations of Christmas as humbug.
